Today is the Feast of St. Stephen, the day Good King Wenceslas looked out and saw the poor man gathering fuel.
Stephen is remembered as the 1st martyr. He was one of the first deacons of the Catholic Church, and is patron saint of them. He is written of in Acts 6 & 7 as being full of wisdom and the Holy Spirit.
A big tie-together-point for St. Stephen and Good King Wenceslas- giving to the poor. Stephen being one of 7 deacons appointed to distribute to the alms to the poor and widowed, Wenceslas giving not only firewood, but food and drink to the poor.
Some wise insight from my dad, a deacon himself:
“Speaking of Good King Wenceslas the last few lines are most important:
Therefore, Christian men, be sure, wealth or rank possessing,
Ye who now will bless the poor, shall yourselves find blessing.”
